Meet ‘Chef Rey’. Chef Reynold Darthard is a Houston area chef who is creating rave reviews for for his exquisite skills in culinary arts. His cheesecake is a thing of legend! Chef Rey has served his dishes to a Who’s Who in the Houston area. From Chicken and Waffles, to Chilean Sea Bass, to his outstanding desserts, Chef Rey is creating culinary delights you must experience. Chef Rey presently serves as the Executive Team Chef for the Houston Astros Baseball Organization and is the author of “How Life Comes Together-Recipes by Chef Rey.”
Executive Chef Reynold Darthard has been a successful chef for over ten years. He began cooking at an early age with his mother and grandmother and while creating these dishes that had been handed down through his family for generations, Chef Rey’s interest and enthusiasm for cooking grew and led him to his present career as a chef.
Prior to his culinary career, Chef Rey attended Texas A&M University and subsequently became Operations Manager for Andon Specialties, Inc., a large oil and gas distributing company. During his 15th year at Andon, Rey received, with honors, his Associate of Applied Science from The Art Institute of Houston/Culinary Program.
In 2003, Chef Rey began Nevele’s, a catering company which catered to many celebrities such as Beyonce, Natalie Cole, Damon Dash, Marvin Sapp, Brian Courtney Wilson, Tramaine Hawkins, Jennifer Holiday, Kurt Carr, Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, Pastor Kirbyjohn Caldwell, Yao Ming, the Yao Ming Foundation, Houston Rockets Owner Leslie Alexander, Tracy McGrady, CAA Sports, and Houston Texans players: Brian Cushing, Matt Schaub, Kevin Bentley, Anthony Hill, Kevin Walters, Antonio Caldwell, Toddrick Berdell, Chris Myers, Mario Williams and DeMeco Ryans and NBA players DJ Augustine, Mike James, Juwan Howard, Kenny Thomas, Robert Horry and Trevor Ariza and Houston Rockets 2010 1st Round Pick Patrick Patterson.
Chef Rey has also supported many philanthropic organizations with his talents including the Casa Home Tour, the Fort Bend Women’s Shelter Boogie, National African- American Breast Cancer Survivorship Organization, Texas Wildlife Association, L.E.A.F., the Bounce Program, the Texas Juvenile Defense Fund, Greater Houston & the American Cancer Society, Pink for a Purpose’ Breast Cancer Awareness and the Fort Bend Focus Magazine honors the Jewels of Fort Bend. Chef Rey experienced great success, and as a result became Tracy McGrady’s personal chef for four years.
In February of 2013 Chef Rey was selected by the Astros organization as their Executive Team Chef. He became responsible for the players and coaches daily nutritional needs working side by side with the Team’s Nutritionist and Strength Coach. Because of time commitment for the Astros Chef Rey made the difficult decision to close his restaurant.
Chef Rey has recently released his Signature Cheesecake, Poundcake, & Tropical Blend Beverage in the public market and has published a book “It’s About Color. The Journey of Being Chef Rey”. His passion is cooking and his motto is “Allow me to touch your palette with passion and class.”
